I lost 30 lb in 6 months
I have been on a diet since late April. In over a little over 180 days I have lost 30 lb. My first week average was 279.7 lb and my highest weight was 282.0 lb. Last week’s average was 249.9 lb and my lowest weight was 247.8 lb.  It has become increasingly hard to maintain weight loss even at a pace of just 5 lb per month so I am now going to aim to maintain...

Vote for a Democrat
Democrats are a painful choice: legislative and presidential overreach at the federal level, support for destructive union-friendly policies, and dogmatic adherence to keynesian big public project recession spending. In California, the Democratic Party candidates for Senate and Governor are two career politicians who lack vigor and ambition for the well-being of our nation and state. Yet, with the...

Big Monsters Are Not Scary
Just finished watching the terrible Monsters film and I have to rant about movies like it and Cloverfield. Big monsters may make striking visuals, but they are no threat to humans. Humans are very, very good at killing big things.  If you look at very early human history you will see a very common pattern: as humans migrated to new areas big animals went extinct. Animals like the dodo, bison,...

The Aeneid by Virgil My rating: 5 of 5 stars Beautiful poem. Some parts are dry, but Virgil died before completing it. The translation is wonderful. Part Odyssey, part Iliad the story of Aeneas is pretty amazing. Loved the marriage ceremony between Dido and Aeneas, under the waterfall with gods present. Loved the games, and of course the war between the Latins and Trojans and the story of...

Lost in the Adriatic sea to Neptune’s Triton like so many of Aeneas brave men in blazing bronze. Juno in all her fury would not have them pass, they are now in the dark waters of charybdis and scylla. A hundred slaughtered bulls to sooth Jupiter’s wife before the journey may have made a difference. Unless some merciful hero throws dirt upon their bones their cries to cross Styx will...
